Does Religion belong in Public Schools Essay - 1803 Words
When looking at the history of America, it is fascinating to see how the public schooling system even got started. The first schools in America were not public schools, as many would presume. Instead, ââ¬Å"the first schools in the United States were religious and not secularâ⬠(Elifson 1). Nearly all public schools, up to the 1960ââ¬â¢s incorporated religion and prayer in their classrooms; however, in the last 50 years, prayer and religion in public schools has been debated over countless times. Even in Hudsonville, Michigan, which holds the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most churches on a single street, there is much debate over prayer and the teaching of Christianity, or any religion, in the public schools. It is perfectly clear that in many circumstances, knowing the religious background of a nation will help enlighten the students to better understand why some nations hold a particular stance on a given matter (Ayers and Reid 1-3). Another author, Rob Boston, talks about this subject in less detail. He argues that ââ¬Å"legitimate instruction about religion as an academic subject in public schools [is not] a problem. As long as itââ¬â¢s done in a non-dogmatic manner intended to educateâ⬠(3). Bostonââ¬â¢s whole article is arguing against the idea of preaching to students about religion. It is interesting that even someone against religion in school wants a broad teaching of religious backgrounds to better understand culture in some events, especially in history. This further proves theShow MoreRelatedPros and Cons of Teaching Creationism in School1197 Words à |à 5 PagesFor this research paper I am going to discuss the pros and the cons about Creationism in school and why I feel that it should be left out of the public school system. Analysis Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman s The Yellow...
Woodruff, Madison Mrs. Johnson Comp. 1302 April 20, 2014 Research Paper Charlotte Perkins Gilman took a leap of faith while writing one of the most notorious stories of her time. The era in which it was written was a time where women were frowned upon for voicing their opinions. Womenââ¬â¢s roles in society have evolved over a course of many years. Jobs, social standings, and other rights have not always come easy like they do today. Women were not treated as equals. Gilmanââ¬â¢s voice is undoubtedly heard in her story, ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠, writing about a woman driven mad by a controlling husband. The two main characters, the narrator and John, relate a sense of irony that Gilman often portrays in her fiction. His negligence and subordination are cast upon the narrator, and her troubles are told through her diary. When first read over, the story seems like it is just about a woman with a mental health problem. When read deeper, the reader will grasp the underlying theme. This feministic story is derived from a time pe riod where women were not given the freedom to make their own decisions. Gilman wanted people to be aware of this. By knowing the time period in which her story is set, it is easier to understand what the narrator is going through. Children With Down Syndrome A Developmental Disorder
Introduction Down Syndrome is a developmental disorder caused by an error in the process of cell division. This disorder is characterized by an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy)(Segal Pesco, 2015). It is the most common chromosomal disorder and affects 1 in 700 live births (Ramia, Musharrafieh, Khaddage, Sabri, 2014). According to Segal and Pesco (2015), Down Syndrome is characterised by physical features such as distinct facial characteristics, low muscle tone; conditions such as congenital heart disease; and Intellectual Disability with IQs typically ranging from 30 to 70. One of the striking characteristics in individuals with Down Syndrome is poor speech and language abilities (Loveall, Channell, Phillips, Abbeduto, Conners, 2016). Thus, this stereotyped perception that children with Down Syndrome have good pragmatic skills as they are highly sociable with good people skills has led to a dearth in literature in this area. This has led to an assumption that their social understanding is intact(Cebula, Moore, Wishart, 2010).
